Product Review—Hair: SheaMoisture Moisture-Rich Ammonia-Free Hair Color System

Product Review—Hair: SheaMoisture Moisture-Rich Ammonia-Free Hair Color System

For more years than I can remember, I dyed my hair jet black. Sometimes I even dyed it blue-black. That was until my black hair out of the bottle backfired on me.  Oh, my color was just fine, it was beautifully jet black.  My body, however, was in shock – anaphylactic shock to be exact. Turned out that after years of dyeing my hair I developed an allergy to black hair dye. So I made the move to blonde hair. Which is a story unto itself…

So, because of here allergies and other complications of my life I could dye my hair for several years. However, the opportunity to try SheaMoisture Hair Color presented itself, so I opted in because of it’s being made with natural and organic ingredients.

Here are the details about SheaMoisture Moisture-Rich, Ammonia-Free Hair Color System – Dark Brown:

My results:

First, let me say that when I opened the box of SheaMoisture hair color, I was blown away by all of the components. It’s hard to  find a box hair color that includes all the extras to ensure the health of your hair, which is what the SheaMoisture Hair Color System includes for $14.99:

  • Radiant Color Crème
  • Radiant Color Developer
  • Professional Latex-Gloves
  • Salon Application Brush
  • Raw Shea Moisture Retention Shampoo
  • Raw Shea Restorative Conditioner
  • Raw Shea Reconstructive Finishing Elixir

My main concern with coloring my hair was to cover the gray, and a permanent hair color is the best way to go for that. I am probably about 15% gray, but it’s concentrated around my hairline, so very obvious when I wear my hair back in particular. I read the instructions (which were complete)  and went to work.  I love the fact that the kit includes an application brush, however I was going full-tilt color so I applied directly from the bottle.  Mind you, it has been years since I have dyed my hair.

My first impression upon applying the hair color–no nasty smell!  This is the first time in life I have colored my hair without having to inhale chemical fumes.  Next was how soft my hair felt during and after the application.  The shampoo and conditioner were a bonus as most kits don’t include these items.  Also included was a reconstructive elixir which was the icing on the cake for my color experience.

After blow drying my hair, I was beyond happy with the results. My gray was gone, my hair was soft and shiny.  I added a little oil and flat ironed and my results are below.

My daughter,  Chelsea, also used the color system  in Reddish Blonde for highlights to her natural black hair. She was equally pleased with the results. (Note that she used a stronger developer to get the lighter highlights).

“The no-drip formula is awesome. No drips mean less mess, less clean up and more color on your hair.
Shea Moisture hair color does not skimp when it comes to conditioning after processing the hair color. Each kit contains a shampoo, conditioner and oil from their restore and repair line of hair care products.  The results are awesome! I actually got lift in the areas that I did not highlight. I got a beautiful, rich red tone. I get so many compliments on my hair color, that you can be sure Shea moisture is my new go-to permanent hair color.”
