Editor’s Picks: Play-Doh Inspired Beauty Products

Continuing our new tradition of putting a beauty twist on fun, random national holidays, we celebrate one of childhood’s most memorable mess-makers–Play-Doh!

The modeling clay was first designed in the 1930s as a reusable, non-toxic,  non-staining wallpaper cleaner by a Cincinatti soap manufacturer. It was later reworked and marketed as a children's craft product after a local classroom discovered its alternative purpose.

In 2003, the Toy Industry Association added Play-Doh to its "Century of Toys List," which catalogs the 100 most creative toys of the 20th century. More than two billion cans of Play-Doh have been sold since 1955, in 75 countries worldwide.

Playtime may be over, but our beauty obessession with all things fun, flashy, and fabulous, is not!

Check out these editor’s picks inspired by the popular play-stuff:

Editor-in-Chief Tracey's Play-Doh Pick:  CoverGirl NatureLuxe Gloss Balm in Coral $6.99

"I started my makeup mixologist ways with Play-Doh.  I loved to create new colors from the four primary colors.  One of my favorite lip colors for summer is bright coral (a mix that I achieved  by smushing together red and yellow Play-Doh).  One of my favorite coral lipstick this summer has been CoverGirl NatureLuxe Gloss Balm in Coral.  It is the perfect orange lipstick that compliments any skin tone.  Plus, the texture is sheer and glossy—ideal for summer makeup.  I also like that it has an SPF of 15 with the formula that includes mango and shea butter; it's like a treatment for my lips!"

Team 20/20 Camille's Play-Doh Pick: Jerome Russell Punky Colour in Alpine Green $8.99 and

Ankara hair piece by Aimas $23.69

"Let's get Play-Doh funky with HAIR! Get crazy with my fave Jerome Russell Punky Colour in Alpine Green! Just like Play-Doh, it washes out with ease. Worried about looking like 'My Little Pony' with your colorful highlights? This is green done right. A few strategic placements is perfect beneath your new Fall Funky Fringe. Have fun!"

"For the less daring, try this all-the-colors-of-the-Play-Doh-rainbow Ankara hair accessory from myasho.com – It's FAB!"

Nerdy by Nature writer Taylor's Play-Doh Pick:  Smith's Rosebud Salve $5

"This Rosebud Salve is the 'balm!' Much like my favorite homemade scented Play-Doh, it's pink, smells like strawberry, is budget-friendly, and just as versitile! I use it all over—on chapped lips, rough elbows, or dry, crusty noses in sore need of some 'salve-ation'. And, it tastes much better than Play-Doh."

The Minimalist Terez's Play-Doh Inspired Pick: Zoya Mod Matte Mini Trio $15

"My Play-Doh days are far from over, with a craft-loving little one in the house and another on the way soon! As much as I hate cleanup, I never tire of getting my hands dirty with my preschooler, even if it means digging yellow and blue dough from under our fingernails after play.

I love having bright, bold, daring colors ON my nails as well- no nudes for me! Zoya Mod Matte Mini Trio is my new go-to for attention-getting neon nails. I like the bright, no-shine finish, and the colors are out of this world: Mitizi—a hot lime green, Phoebe—an eclectic electric blue, and Lolly—a fierce fuscia that is my fav in the bunch. What I LOVE about the Zoya line is that all their polishes are camphor, formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate FREEperfectly safe for new mommies-to-be!"

Bona Fide Face Deidre's Play-Doh Pick: Queen Helene Mint Julep Natural Masque $4

"Always amused with Play-Doh, I couldn't understand why the green-colored one didn't make bubbles like my favorite watermelon gum. A bit older, I am now fond of another green product: Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque. It is my quick fix to rid my face of a dull look. There's a refreshing, tingling (read: mint) sensation that takes place after slathering this thick (but pliable) blue-green masque across my face. After 20 minutes (sometimes longer…lol), pores shrink and blotchy skin is in check."

LA Beauty Newbie's Play-Doh Pick: LashControl Mascara in Purple Squeeze $20

"I remember being particularly fond of purple Play-Doh as I would spend hours squeezing and shaping it into various shapes. As a matter of fact, LashControl Mascara in Purple Squeeze comes to mind as this innovative mascara plumps my lashes with a conditioning and lengthening formula. Regardless of how many times I run the 2x volumizing brush through my lashes, I am constantly rewarded with black glossy, lush fringes. Now only if they could make this in a regal purple hue!"

Access Hollywood Nalo's Play-Doh Pick: NARS Blush in Desire $27

"When I was little, I had the Play-Doh 'Fuzzy Pumper Barber & Beauty Shop' where you could grow hair and make hairstyles; I started young in my career in beauty! One of my favorite beauty items is NARS Desire blush—a cotton candy pink that gives your complexion a nice glow."

Team 20/20 Writer Chelsea's Play-Doh Pick: Revlon's Colorburst in Papaya $7.49

"Play-Doh was one of my favorite childhood toys because of the bright colors and smooth texture.  My love for bright colors and smooth texture has carried over into my adult life- i.e. my lipgloss addiction.  I love Revlon's Colorburst in Papaya.  Its pop of color and creamy texture get the glossing job done!"

And last but not least, our Team Pick:

Demeter Fragrance Library Play-Doh Cologne $39.50

Demeter Fragrance Library is known for its high-end, unique, 'smells just like the real thing' perfumes. Some of their authentic scents include 'Incense', 'Laundromat', 'Orange Cream Pop', 'Gin and Tonic', and the suprisingly popular 'Dirt.' When we saw that they created a special-edition fragrance celebrating Play-Doh's 50th anniversary, we decided that this unique offering definitely deserved a place on our list! According to Demeter, the quirky cologne is intended for "highly-creative people, who seek a whimsical scent reminiscent of their childhood."
