In an effort to increase awareness of melanoma and other types of skin cancer, the American Academy of Dermatology has designated the first Monday in May as Melanoma Monday. According to the AAD, melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and the most common cancer for 25-to 29-year-olds. Most people know the importance of sunscreen and what it can mean for skincare and sun safety, but products still end up being misused, leaving many at risk for permanent skin damage and skin aging.

Below is a list of five sunscreen mistakes to avoid at all costs.

1. Thinking you’re exempt from sunscreen because you have dark or olive skin.

2. Not applying sunblock often enough.

3. Neglecting to wear sunscreen while driving or working indoors.

4. Using a sunscreen that blocks only UVB rays.

5. Using a sunscreen that has expired.

To keep skin protected, La Roche-Posay Anthelios offers sunscreens which block both UVA and UVB rays. And always remember… apply and re-apply!

In partnership with the Women’s Dermatologic Society (WDS), the SOS – Save Our Skin campaign lives through a series of initiatives, including skin checks at sporting events, local hospitals and drug stores as well as free skin checks offered to all L’Oréal corporate employees.
