Stila Still Loves Barbie and So do I -- Fall 2009 Makeup
I remember my first Barbie. What a doll! Big hair, loads of eyeliner, perfectly pursed ruby lips, legs that didn’t end, itty bitty waist with and stacked. Barbie was the babe, the Barberella, the “Brick House” of dolls. And those heels! Barbie was strutting the stiletto before Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin became lust list fodder for shoe freaks. Little girls like me were completely facinated. Believe me, I aspired to all of Barbie’s physical attributes. I guess that’s why I’m a makeup artist. What I missed in leg length, I made up for in eyeliner. And now Barbie joins the auspicious ranks of other 50 something Phenoms. Today Barbie is a fashion and beauty icon. Her resume is nothing short of amazing. How many jobs has this chick had? Doctor, teacher, astronaut, rapper, fashion editor, African American presidential candidate and palaeontologist are a few of her more ambitious gigs. Alll those career hops, does Barbie have adult ADHD? Hmmmm…..The good news for girls collecting Barbie — each career means a new outfit. Girls can live vicariously through Barbie’s never-ending wardrobe. For women like me who still silently hunger for that out-of-proportion shape (although rumor has it that Barbie has gained in the waistline), a closet busting at the seams, and a boyfriend who looks good and never says a disparaging word, there is the beauty alternative. We can just look fake! Yea! I love artrifice. MAC did thier Barbie in Spring 2007 and you can still find pieces of the collection on eBay. Stila’s Four “Decades of Beauty” paint cans are filled with everything you need to recreate your favorite iconic Barbie™ looks. The sets also include a “Barbie™ Look Book” that includes a history of each top-selling Barbie™ doll over the last 50 years! Of course, still having my diehard affection for Barbie and beauty, plus being a child of the ’70’s, and being a brown girl, I HAD to purchase the Foxy Brown Barbie. She is brown and beautiful with a serious afro to boot. I had that same afro in my senior portrait, much to my mother’s chagrin. (that’s fodder for my autobiography however…) Of course everyone knows that Pam Grier is an icon, no little makeup palette could ever duplicate that woman. Pam Grier was BAD as they used to say. So Stila is still making Barbie inspired makeup for Fall 2009 . Smudgepots in bright colors. I think I like them. The multi-tasking gel formula can be used as a liner and a shadow that stays on all day. Available in three bold, of-the-moment shades: – black with pink shimmer Purple Pumps – purple with pink shimmer Cobalt Clutch – vibrant blue with intense shimmer Little Black Dress to use as liner: paint smudge pot at lash roots to create a fuller looking lash line. don’t worry if the line isn’t perfect – smudge pots are meant to look a little “sexy smudge-y”! to use as a shadow: dab product on the back of your hand, then sweep smudge pot on lids like a shadow. you can also use as a primer under your favorite shimmer shadow! Stila also made a new waterproof liner for the Fall 2009 Barbie Collection. Its $32 though. I’m not so sure if it’s on my “gotta get it” list or not. The Claim: The thin marker-like tip is easy to use even for the least experienced, and delivers a defined thin line to a dramatic bold line with precision. Goes on smoothly without skipping, smudging, or pulling, and lasts all day! You can see the full Stila Fall Barbie Collection here.
