Spa(ahhh) Day Sunday: DIY Lavender Deodorant or Try Lavanila The Healthy Deodorant

It’s National Breast Cancer Awareness month, so let’s be aware of the chemicals we are putting on our skin, starting with deodorant.

I have for years used deodorant bought in my drugstore. But, now that I am living with CLL (Chronic Lymphatic Leukemia) I am so careful about ingesting chemicals through my skin. On, occasion I will venture out and make a DIY recipe, and this is one that I think is worthy of trying. I found it on Nutrition Stripped.

Mainstream deodorant has taken the hit for containing more chemicals than we need in, with some being named as carcinogens. Nutrition Stripped gives this list:  “Typical deodorants and antiperspirants contain a list of chemical laden ingredients such as aluminum, parabens, triclosan, TEA & DEA, talc, propylene glycol, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances to top it all off. All of these are chemicals that have either been shown to disrupt our hormones, aid in developing bacterial resistance, and many sadly are tested on animals.”

You can easily customize your scent by adding a different essential oil for fragrance.

Thanks for Nutrition Stripped for this great recipe and photos.

DIY LAVENDER DEODORANT
INGREDIENTS
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons arrowroot powder (can add more for a thicker deodorant)
  • 2-4 drops of lavender essential oil
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Simply mix to combine all the ingredients in a small bowl.
  2. I like storing mine in a small glass jar with a lid.
  3. If you enjoy a creamier deodorant similar to a moisturizer, use more coconut oil.
  4. If you enjoy a harder deodorant similar to a stick, use more arrowroot powder.
  5. Apply to underarms as needed, rubbing in.
  6. Fresh and clean!
NOTES
If you don’t have arrowroot on hand, use corn starch.

TIPS // Coconut oil melts at warmer temperatures, therefore I find it best to store this in a cool place to make sure it stays a solid! If you’re in warm/hot climates you can simply keep this in the fridge and when you apply it on the skin, it’ll melt beautifully! How to use // Simply take about a teaspoon sized amount on your fingertips and gently rub it into the skin on your underarms just like you would lotion! The coconut oil, even if solid, will start to melt with your body heat and will glide on smoothly.

If you are a lazy girl like me, I highly recommend trying Lavanila the Healthy Deodorant. It comes in a variety of fragrances with Lavender being one of my favorites. You can read my review here.
