Rihanna Does Blue Eye Makeup Right

Celebrities are popping up in blue eye makeup on the red carpet as well as  making the blue eye makeup trend and everyday staple.  As a makeup artsit and a general consumer of everything makeup, I have known for years that wearing some blue around the eyes can make the eyes shine!  Blue brightens the whites — perfect for those days when you are looking as tired as you feel.  It’s not as harsh as black, so blue eyeliner or blue eyeshadow can impart a more youthful appearance.  The key is finding the right blue.

Rihanna is the most recent celebrity to jump on the blue eye makeup bandwagon.  I love the way Rihanna is always at the forefront of fashion and beauty.  She is not afraid to take a chance with edgy looks.  Her edginess balances her beauty, making her a blinging beauty icon at her early age.  Check out Rhinna in electric blue eyeliner.  This is one of my favorite looks.  I have been a fan of blue eyeliner for years and this is one trend that I think is here to stay.  BLINGING BLUE EYE MAKEUP!

To get the popular cat’s eye look, extend your eyeliner just beyond the outer corner of the lower lashes in an upward direction.

My top 5 blue eyeliners:

1.  Urban Decay Liquid Liner in Radium, a metallic royal blue — $18.  The quick-drying formula won’t budge, even under the most strenuous conditions.  I have been a fan of this blue eyeliner for years and it most resembles the blue eyeliner that Rihanna is wearing in the picture above.  Downside — Urban Decay changed the packaging a while back, so the bottle is a little large for your makeup bag you throw in your purse. urban-decay-liquid-liner

2.  Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner in navy — $22.  This gel-formula that glides over the lid without pulling or tugging. The quick-dry formula sets quickly and stays put all day. this gel-formula that glides over the lid without pulling or tugging. 3. Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes in Majorelle Blue 15L, a metallic royal blue — $17 A two-in-one waterproof eyeshadow and liner pencil that glides on effortlessly.  No downside!

4.  Loreal Hip Color Truth Eyeliner in Navy — $10. Loreal HIP is great pencil liner that comes in under the budget beauty bling category.  This exciting anti-humidity, long-wearing formula prevents color from losing its edge while delivering a bold color deposit with a smooth application.  No downside.  I love that Loreal Hip is a drugstore brand as it often goes on sale, many times with a buy one, get one free.  Stock up when you see this ofer.  Plus, the pigments are dense and work well for darker skins.

5.  Sue Devitt Eye Intensifier Pencil in Victoria Falls — $22 I became a fan of Sue Devitt pencils when I met her and started working with her line.  These pencils have a smudger on one end that makes them the perfect tool for acheiving a smoky look without really trying.  Downside — you need to purchase a separate pencil sharpener for this oversized pencil.

Eyeliner how-to:

Liquid Liner — Perhaps the most difficult liner to master.  Until you have the steady hand to liner your eyes with a liquid liner, start with dashes right in the lash line.  Then connect the dots.  The point of eyeliner is to emphasize the eyes, give them difnition and depth.  Big huge lines are distracting, unless of course you are going for the Cleopatra look.  Keep liquid liner on top of lids or it can appear heavy and harsh.  With Rihann’s blue eyeliner, the application is with a light hand and skillfully done, so no hard looking lines.

Pencil Liner — If you are new to eyeliners, pencil liners are the best starting poing.  Be sure your pencil is sharp.  If you pencil liner is too dry, you may need to warm it by rubbing it across the back of your hand a few times.  It more blunt the point, the wider the line you will have.  Draw your eyeliner along your upper lash line, as close to your lashes as possible, beginning at the inner corner of your eye. Don’t stretch your skin too much, it can make the eyeliner messy and uneven when you release it.

Gel Liners — These eyeliners in a pot are my absolute favorite now.  I gushed a few days ago about my Bobbi Brown gel liner, and I seriously believe that next to the pencil gel liners are the easist to use with the most impact. You will need a liner brush.  You can choose the typical thin tip brush, or more popular these days, is the stiff angle brush.  I love this brush for lining as it just makes the whole job so much easier.  I also like a smudger brush for lining in the inner rim below and around the lower lash line.  Use the same method above for applying liquid liner, however, I’m sure you will find that the gel liner are very forgiving and easy to use.

TIP — keep a couple q-tips on hand for clean up.  When creating a cat eye with liner, take a q-tip dipped in either foundation or concealer and trace around the liner.  This not only serves as a clean-up step, but serves to give the edge of the line a perfect slant.  The concealer or foundation will also serve as a subtle highlight.

Try a blue eyeliner for a summer makeup pick-me-up.  You too can be a blinging babe like Rihanna.  Check in tomorrow for an update on Rihanna’s blue eyeshadow!
