Product Review: Carol's Daughter Macadamia Hold & Control Smoother—Sleek-Style Miracle
When I’m not wearing a weave, I’m rocking a pony. That means I need to tame my five types of natural hair into one smooth swoop of hair tightly held with a scrunci. Yes, five types of hair—straight, wavy, curly, frizzy, fine, and resistant to straightening. It’s that hair that some people swear is “good”, when in fact it’s a hot mess. Don’t let the curly stuff fool you; my Sybil-esque hair is hard to deal with. When I wear the ponytail, I have traditionally used the cheapo brown gel from the beauty supply (it covers my grey and it can probably work as bondo). So despite the crunchy-flakes texture of my hair once I have applied a good dose of that brown goo, I know it’s going to hold come hell or high water. But then there is the downside—flakes, brown buildup. Gross. I have tried other gels, but it’s like the “Three Bears”—too hard, too gooey, and then… I was recently sent Carol’s Daughter new Macadamia Hold & Shine Smoother to review, and I’m glad I was. Here are the deets on Carol’s Daughter new Macadamia Hold & Shine Smoother: What it is: A gel-wax hair pomade for smooth, flake-free hold without stickiness. What it does: This smoother features a clear foam texture that provides amazingly long-lasting hold without the sticky, crunchy effect of other pomades, gels, and heavy waxes. It instantly eliminates wild, unruly hair that sticks out and threatens to sabotage your sleek ‘do, including slicked-back styles, polished ponytails, or tapered cuts. What it is formulated WITHOUT: – Parabens – Sulfates – Synthetic Fragrances – Synthetic Dyes – Petrochemicals – Phthalates What else you need to know: Made with macadamia oil, this ingredient creates a protective barrier against high temperatures from styling tools. Honey extract helps to heal and seal split ends. Horsetail extract helps make hair more elastic and resilient to breakage. My results: When I first opened the jar of Carol’s Daughter new Macadamia Hold & Shine Gel, I was reminded of a gel that I used years ago, minus the artificial color, with the addition of a fresh natural scent from………… This gel, which is not watery or goopy, is a little stiff in the jar—almost a mix between a gel and a pomade, but leaning more on the gel side due to it’s transparency and texture. It makes that familiar sound that the other gel makes. One finger scoop of this gel slicked down my hair from hairline to the nape of my neck. The good news is that my hair was lying down with a beautiful wave pattern and gorgeous shine, minus the crackle effect. I could run my hands over my hair and feel my hair, not dried up gel. The shine was incredible, and when I took my ponytail out, my hair was curly without the frizz. YAY! My hair also feels nourished after I take the ponytail down. The bad news: The price of this gel is a bit high for this girl. As much as I love it, I can see myself paying $22 for a couple of ounces of hair gel. Particularly when I can get a product for $4 that does the same thing. I imagine that someone who applies this through their entire head of hair on a daily basis may only have a week’s worth of product at best. That adds up to over $100 per month on hair gel. No thanks. Bling Factor: Pro: Holds, adds shine, hair does not get crunchy, good ingredients Con: Price Buy Again: No–Too pricey for the size Price: $22 Packaging: 3.5 Blings– Pretty packaging, clear jar shows the product. I don’t think for the price I should have to stick my finger in the product Overall: 4 Blings — This wax-gel is an amazing product, however the price for 2.25 ounces is prohibitive.
