Headlines: Perfect Curls, Perfect Girls

If you weren’t blessed with beautiful natural curls and you want to add some body and bounce to your hair, it’s time to reach for the curling tools. When used properly, these handy hair appliances can create marvelous results. As with most things in life though, there’s room for error. If you go wayward with your wands or irons, you can end up more poodle than princess.

To help ensure you achieve the results you’re after, take a look at these tips below.

Choose your equipment with care

Before you sit in front of the mirror hair in hands, make sure you choose the right curling products for you. This equipment comes in all shapes, sizes and styles. For instance, you’ll need to decide whether to go for curling wands or irons. Also, select a barrel size that will enable you to create the style of curls you’re after. If you want loose waves or curls, opt for a product that’s around one to two inches in diameter. If you’re keen to create ringlets and tighter curls, you’ll need a thinner version.

Find the right temperature

When you come to use the irons, you’ll have to find the right temperature setting. If you have fine hair or colour-treated tresses, it’s wise to stick to lower heats to avoid damage. For thicker locks, it’s possible to turn up the temperature.

Prepare your hair

For the best results, make sure you prepare your hair properly before you start curling it. Give your locks a thorough wash and if you have fine hair, use a volumizing shampoo. While you’re tresses are still damp, spray them with a heat protector product. Next, run some strong-hold mousse through your hair before blow drying. This will help to keep your style in place once you’ve finished. If you want to add extra volume, dry your hair upside down.

Create your look of choice

Start by separating and clipping your hair into sections to make it easier to work with. Then, if it’s tight curls you want, take sections of around one inch, mist them with hairspray and then either clamp and twist them with your irons or wrap them around your wand, almost from root to tip. Once you’ve done each section, finish the look by lightly finger combing your curls and applying a coating of hairspray.

For looser curls, follow the same technique but take larger sections of hair and don’t go all the way to the roots. If you find your curls too bouncy, brush them out a little before applying the final spray.

Whatever look you’re trying to create, never be tempted to curl your hair while it’s wet or even slightly damp. This could cause serious damage, especially to the ends.
