Get the Look: Janelle Monae’s ‘Dance Apocalyptic’ Video Looks – Makeup by Saisha Beecham & CoverGirl

You have never seen Janelle Monae look quite like this.  Natural hair flowing, makeup turned up with the latest Flamed Out Color Collection from CoverGirl.

Janelle Monae ‘Dance Apocalyptic’ Video Look 1

For Janelle’s first look we wanted to stay true to her typical image, which is kind of a Marilyn Monroe classic beauty look.

I started with an all over coverage foundation, using Clean Whipped Creme foundation in Tawny (365). This looks amazing on her because it blends perfectly into her natural skin tone.

On the eyes, I dusted a sheer golden coat of eye shadow over the lid just under the brow bone. I recommend Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Melted Gold (330). To give her eyes that Marilyn Monroe flare, I did a sharp clean line of LineBlast 24HR Eyeliner in Enduring Black (600) across the top lash line and brought it out into a wing for drama. For more fiery drama I had to go with none other than Flamed Out Water Resistant Mascara in Black Blaze (800). This gave her eyes the piercing pop they needed for the performance shots. On the apples of her cheeks, I blended a cream blush to give her a natural rosy glow.

I finished up with a subtle lip look. I used LipPerfection Lip color in Kiss (275) which is not too far from Janelle’s own natural lip shade.

Look 2

For Janelle’s 2nd look for “Weather Jane,” we stepped outside of her natural beauty box and added a little extra sass with a smoky eye.

Her foundation from the first look had great staying power through all the takes so there was no need to reapply the Clean Whipped Creme Foundation in Tawny (365).

On the eyes, I began with the darker side, usually step 2, of Smoky ShadowBlast in Onyx Smoke (800) all over the lower part of her eyelid. I then set that with Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Molten Black (300). For even more intensity, I blended it into the bottom lash line. Next, I smoothed along an intense coat of Smoky ShadowBlast in Silver Sky (805) and blended evenly. I flipped the steps, using the dark color first and light second, for more intensity. I love these shadows because there are no rules! You can use them how you want.

Of course, we had to finish off with a bang using one of Janelle’s favorite lipstick colors—LipPerfection Lip color in Hot (305)! This red looks stunning on Janelle and is definitely becoming one of her signature shades!
