“What's in a name?  That which we call a rose; By any other name would smell as sweet.”

The rose has been a symbol of love, beauty, war, and politics.  According to fossil evidence, the rose is 35 million years old.  Today, there are over 30,000 varieties of roses and it has the most complicated family tree of any known flower species. Cultures in each age of world history have adored and highly esteemed the rose.

Greek mythology tells us that Aphrodite gave the rose its name, but it was the goddess of flowers, Chloris, who created it.  According to Hindu legend, Vishnu believed the rose was more beautiful, while Brahma exalted the beauty of the lotus.  Once Brahma beheld a rose, he changed his viewpoint. During the reign of the Roman Empire, roses became synonymous with excess. Even though the Romans originally cultivated the rose for medicinal purposes, emperors used rose petals to fulfill their hedonistic pursuits.  They filled their baths and fountains with rose water and sat on carpets of rose petals during their feasts.  In the 17th century, roses and rose water served as tender due to their high demand.  In the 19th century, Napoleon’s wife Josephine had such great love of roses that she began an extensive collection at Chateau de Malmaison.  Here Redoute compiled his watercolor collection “Les Roses”, considered one of the world’s best records of botanical illustrations. roses

Over 50 million roses are given for Valentine’s Day each year.  Although many lovers present roses by the dozen, a single rose promises lifelong devotion and romance to the love of your life. On Valentine’s Day, red roses may be the number one flower sent, but orange, coral purple roses are close runners up.

Some say red roses symbolize love and passion, while orange and coral roses denote desire.  If you find yourself falling in love, you may want to give yellow roses with red tips.  When hit hard by love, purple roses may be in order as they represent love at first sight. Over the years, the rose has been prized for its beauty and for its extraordinary fragrance.

After WWII, a trend in rose breeding brought numerous new colors and color combinations to the fore, but the fragrance waned.  In our day, breeders are again focusing on fragrance in their rose introductions.  Known as the “queen of flowers”, roses are the predominant flower in the world of fragrance, so it is no wonder that the center of attention is once again on their aromatic qualities.is present in 75% of the perfumes produced in the world.
