Fierce Fridays : Secret Weapon — Scent

“To attract men, I wear a perfume called ‘New Car Interior'”

Rita Rudner

Marilyn MonroeWhy is scent such a secret weapon? Well, one reason is that scent is memorable — good or bad.  Have you ever looked around a room or over your shoulder and mentally asked yourself, “Who is that????”  I’m sure we all have.  I think it would be safe to say that we all love to smell goooood, and more importantly, we love to be around people who smell yummy.   Even my favorite e-card characters Hoops & Yoyo recognize the importance of smelling good.

We are hard-wired with a Vermerol Nasal organ which is located in our nasal passage.  This little organ is packed with receptors that recognize pheromones.  A little trivia for your etymologists out there — pheromone is from the Greek — pherin (to carry) and hormon (to excite).  Pheromones are emitted from fertile bodies and may or may not be attractive to the opposite sex.  They are airborne and do not have a fragrance, but they can indeed perform as an aphrodisiac.  It’s no wonder that Marilyn Miglin’s Pheromone Perfume, touted as the “fragrance of love”  is still (since 1979) the number one choice for pure animal attraction!  Miglin’s research culminated in a fragrance filled with jasmine blossoms, tonka extract (vanilla), wild grasses, exotic barks and more.  A grand total of 179 rare essences that culminate in $500 per oz.  I think that Pheromone may  indeed be secret weapon numero uno.

When asked what she wore to bed, Marilyn Monroe retorted, “My Chanel N° 5.” That statement of course sent the sales of Chanel N° 5 through the roof. I have my personal favorites when it comes to scents — for myself and for men.

Over the years I have whittled down my choice list to a few — and they are mainly summer versus winter selections.  I tend to prefer warmer, headier scents.  So I will opt for a lighter version for summer months and then bring on the full-on version for winter.  My signature scent has become Chanel Coco Mademoiselle— not so much because I’m falling down in love with it,  but because it elicits positive reactions from EVERYONE.  I think that the base notes of patchouli and vetiver may have something to do with the reactions I garner.  Women never fail to ask me what I am wearing.  I had a guy tell me,”Your perfume is turning me on.”  Okay…. I even notice it on my seat belt or pillow case and think, WOW!nose

Now my absolute favorite fragrance is Vivienne Westwood Boudior.  A classic oriental scent with bottom notes (the ones that linger) of cinnamon, coriander, cardamom, vanilla, amber, sandalwood and patchouli, now wonder it’s been tagged as “rich” and “deadly.”  Hmmm, sounds like James Bond girl fantasy persona.

It’s been noted that men seem to like women who flaunt the scent of baked goods — vanilla, donuts and pumpkin pie.  I think the only place a man’s getting the hint of a donut scent from me is my breath.  One of my clients voiced her disappointment over a very hot fragrance (will remain nameless) which had the primary scent of vanilla.  When her hubby told her she reminded him of his mom’s pound cake, she blew a gasket — yes, she can’t stand the mother-in-law.

A few tips for perfume application:

  • Apply on pulse points — inner wrists, elbows, front of neck, behind knees.
  • Don’t rub your wrists together, that breaks the notes and destroys the true fragrance.
  • You should not be able to smell yourself an hour later — if you do, you overdid it.
  • Use lighter versions of your scent for day — lotion, cream or an eau de toilette.
  • For longer lasting fragrance, layer ancillary products — bath gel, soap, lotion etc.
  • Perfume has the longest staying power, then eau de perfume, and lastly eau de toilette (cologne).

So ladies, think before you spritz when you go out tonight.  Do you want to leave an aura of apple pie?  Or perhaps an aura of pure pheromone will do.

Share your favorite fragrance — for yourself or for the opposite sex!
