Tarte Cheek Stain in Flush Review: The Dewy Blush That Gives Brown Skin a Natural Glow
Long before cream and liquid blush became beauty essentials, Tarte Cheek Stain was giving cheeks that coveted lit-from-within flush. Years after first falling for it, I still love the sheer berry color, dewy finish and effortless application—especially on brown and mature skin.

Tarte describes Flush as a sheer berry and calls Cheek Stain the product that started the brand. The limited-edition return proves just how enduring this formula has been.
First Impressions
There are beauty products you like, and then there are the ones you remember.
Tarte Cheek Stain falls firmly into the second category for me. I became a Tarte believer when the brand first came to Sephora.com and, through my work with the education and beauty advisor departments, I had the opportunity to get my hands on new products early.
Cheek Stain quickly became a favorite—and all these years later, I understand why.
What made it special then is exactly what makes it relevant now: sheer, juicy-looking color without the heavy look of traditional powder blush.
Why I Love It
The finish is the star.
Flush doesn’t look like a layer of blush sitting on top of the skin. The translucent berry color allows your complexion to show through, creating the impression that the flush is actually coming from within the skin.
That’s how I want blush to look.
And as I’ve gotten older, I’ve appreciated that dewy finish even more. Rather than emphasizing texture with a dry or overly powdery finish, the sheen gives the cheeks a fresh, healthy appearance.

Application & Blendability
This is wonderfully uncomplicated makeup.
Glide a small amount over the cheeks and blend the edges with your fingertips, sponge or brush. I prefer building the color gradually rather than applying a heavy swipe all at once.
I’ve used Tarte Cheek Stains on complexions ranging from very light to deep, and the transparent quality of the formula is part of what makes it so versatile.
On brown skin, Flush gives you berry color without covering the natural dimension of your complexion.
Tracey’s Beauty Tip
Don’t stop the blush directly on the apples of the cheeks. Blend the edges upward and outward toward the temples for a softer, more lifted effect.
For mature skin, start with less product and build. You want to maintain that beautiful transparency.
Wear Test
This was always one of my favorite things about Cheek Stain.
The initial dewiness can soften throughout the day, but the color leaves behind a stain. Even after some of the product has worn away, there’s still a beautiful hint of flush remaining on the cheeks.
That’s very different from a blush that simply disappears.
Who Should Skip It?
If you prefer an intensely matte complexion or want highly opaque blush pigment in one swipe, this probably isn’t your ideal formula.
The beauty of Cheek Stain is its sheerness. It’s about fresh, believable color rather than a heavily made-up cheek.
Is Tarte Cheek Stain Good for Mature Skin?
Yes—and this is one reason the formula has aged so well.
I’ve always loved the dewy finish, but I appreciate it even more on mature skin. A sheer cream or gel-like cheek color can give the complexion dimension without adding another obvious layer of powder.
The key is application: use a light hand, blend thoroughly and build only where you want more color.
Worth the Splurge?
For me, yes.
This isn’t a new discovery I’m suddenly enthusiastic about. I loved Tarte Cheek Stain when I originally reviewed it, and the qualities that impressed me then—easy application, believable color and a gorgeous dewy finish—are still exactly what I look for in blush today.
Beauty Closet Status
ICON.
Tarte Cheek Stain helped establish an entire approach to blush that feels remarkably current today: sheer, blendable, skin-like color in an easy stick format.
That’s staying in my Beauty Closet.
Would I Repurchase?
Absolutely.
My original verdict was essentially, love it, always have, always will.
Years later, I’m not changing my mind.
