Beyonce’ has an alter ego — Sasha Fierce.
It’s her performance character, it’s Beyonce’s transition from everyday Beyonce’ to uber Beyonce, to fierce Beyonce’. I’m sure every woman and girl must have something that she believes gives her “super” powers if you will. Something you can pull out of a hat that makes you fierce. It can be tangible — that little black dress that makes your hubby pounce.
Or maybe your fierceness comes from something intangible — and experience in life that has strengthened you beyond words. Maybe it’s the glow in your children’s eyes when they tell you they love you. Only you know that when you hit the pavement in the morning, that THING, that particular experience is what fuels you, it’s what keeps you going another day. It’s what makes you FIERCE!

I used to think it was my matte red lipstick and 3.5 inch stilettos that made me fierce. I felt invincible, I looked invincible, but I wasn’t fierce. It was a costume, it wasn’t real. When my marriage of about 20 years ended, when I lost my job that I loved, when my depression became debilitating because I lost my insurance with my job (no meds), when I had no way to support my kids and had to get food stamps, when shortly thereafter my mother died, when I realized my father’s Alzheimer’s was much worse than I knew, when I had to change my father’s diapers, when ageism kept slapping me in the face in the job market, when I had to cow-girl up for the sake of three beautiful daughters who had only me to depend — that’s when I became fierce. It took a couple years, but I don’t have to depend on the exterior to define my fierceness. It’s inside of me.
I am Tracey Fierce.
But I’m never giving up red lipstick and stilettos. Heck no.
