Product Review—Hair: Pantene Pro V Truly Natural Collection

Disclosure: This post was sponsored by Pantene through their partnership with POPSUGAR Select. While I was compensated to write a post about Pantene Truly Natural, all opinions are my own.

I have been wearing natural hair for ages, it just never really crossed my mind to do a relaxer.  My primary problem over the years has been keeping my fine, curly hair, which is prone to frizziness tame and moisturized.  So, naturally, (no pun intended), I have made up my own concoctions–lotion and water being a favorite–and have used almost every major hair brand on the market, from the luxe to budget to get this frizzy mane under control.

I have used Pantene hair care products over the years, even the ones not made for natural or ethnic hair, so checking out Pantene Truly Natural hair care collection for natural ethnic hair is right up my alley.

I had the opportunity to try the following products from the Pantene Truly Natural line which include the following:

Clarifying Shampoo, Deep Conditioner, Co-Wash Cleansing Conditioner, Defining Curls Custard and Shine Serum with Argan Oil.

Here are the details about the Pantene Pro V Truly Natural collection:

African American women with natural hair can have a tight curl pattern, making it difficult for the scalp’s natural sebum to moisturize the hair. It can also be prone to tangling and dryness. The Pro-V formula offers deep cleansing without stripping away the natural moisture.  Shampoo and conditioner in both collections is affordably priced at $4.99.  Additional treatment and styling products are available in each collection.

Pantene Pro-V Truly Natural Hair Clarifying Shampoo1.  Pantene Pro-V Truly Natural Hair Clarifying Shampoo:

Pantene’s Truly Natural Line is a line of products designed to help manage your natural hair.  Pantene knows that your hair has a unique structure with distinctive twists & turns so hair can knot and be unmanageable.  Pantene’s Truly Natural Clarifying Shampoo gently cleans, removing build-up and oily residue leaving hair shiny, clean and refreshed.

My results:

I was honestly terrified to use this shampoo.  My experience with clarifying shampoos has been the type that swimmers use–stripping! Pantene Truly Natural is not that type of clarifying shampoo. My hair was gently cleansed without feeling stripped and crunchy.  I have been wearing a ponytail the last month or so, so I use hair gel and pomade (which can really build up in the hair), and this clarifying shampoo removed the buildup with just one shampoo.

Bling Factor:

Pro: Gentle, effective, non-stripping

Con: None

Price: $4.99

Buy Again: Yes

Packaging: 4 Blings

Overall: 5 Blings

2.  Pantene Pro-V Truly Natural Hair Deep Conditioner:

Pantene Pro V Truly Natural_Deep_Conditioner

Helps Restore Moisture While Detangling Natural Hair

  • 72 Hour Moisture
  • Oil Enriched Formula
  • Gentle Enough for Color-Treated Hair

Pantene’s Truly Natural Line is a line of products designed to help manage your natural hair.  Pantene knows that your hair has a unique structure with distinctive twists & turns so hair can knot and be unmanageable.  Pantene’s oil-enriched Truly Natural Conditioner moisturizes and detangles natural hair.  The Pro-V formula leaves hair soft, shiny, and protected from damage.

My results:

I have an unnatural love for conditioner–I’m kind of a conditioner freak. So, the Pantene Deep Conditioner was  my favorite product in the Truly Natural  line.  After using it, I could finger comb my hair and there were no tangles.  Nada, none. I went without a leave in conditioner, which is a huge no-no for me, as there is not one in the line, but my hair felt conditioned for quite a few days after.  That was a shocker for me, even though I do have a “dirty” little secret–I never completely rinse out my conditioner…

Now for the packaging bling factor–FINALLY, someone got the shampoo-to-conditioner ratio right! I have always had an issue with having more shampoo than conditioner, however, this packaging is a winner for me as the conditioner outweighs the shampoo (as you can see from photos).

Bling Factor:

Pro: Truly deep conditions, detangles, rinses well

Con: No directions regarding length of time to leave on hair on bottle

Price: $4.99-$7.49 (depending on size)

Buy Again: Yes

Packaging: 5 Blings — love that there is more conditioner than shampoo

Overall: 5 Blings

3.  Pantene Pro-V Truly Natural Hair Defining Curls Styling Custard:

Pantene Pro V Truly Natural_Custard

Defines Natural Curls & Adds Shine Pantene’s Truly Natural Line is a line of products designed to help manage your natural hair.  Pantene knows that your hair has a unique structure with distinctive twists & turns so hair can knot and be unmanageable.  Pantene’s oil-enriched Curls Styling Custard defines curls and controls frizz for 24 hours even in high humidity and leave curls touchably soft and manageable.

My results:

I have natural hair, but I don’t wear my hair curly, so of course I subject my 3 daughters to rigorous testing of beauty products since I am a blogger.  This time around, my 16 year old daughter who wears her hair naturally curly, was my subject. In my opinion, her curls looked defined and frizz-free.  She maintained  that her hair felt  “crunchy.”  I touched them, and they didn’t feel so crunchy to me.

So, I had a second daughter try the custard, and her curls were crunch-free.  Clearly a case of the first daughter using too much product.  We didn’t however see frizz-free hair for an extended time. And maybe that’s because you need more product (crunchiness) to fight the frizzies.

Bling Factor:

Pro: Defines curls

Con: Finding the balance to not have crunchy hair and to keep hair frizz free

Price: $7.99

Buy Again: No

Packaging: 3 Blings–Not a fan of products in tubs

Overall: 4 Blings

4. Pantene Pro-V Truly Natural Hair Shine Serum

 Pantene Pro-V® Truly Natural_Argan_Oil_019_

It Leaves Your Hair Soft, Smooth & Protected Pantene’s Truly Natural Line is a line of products designed to help manage your natural hair.  Pantene knows that your hair has a unique structure with distinctive twists & turns so hair can knot and be unmanageable.  Pantene’s Shine Serum provides intense moisturization and a long-lasting brilliant shine.  Lightweight shine & frizz control for Natural Hair.

My results:

I’m a huge fan of argan oil and hair serums, so my expectations were high for the Pantene Pro-V® Truly Natural Shine Serum with Argan Oil.  For the price point, this shine serum is a winner. It does contain some silicone ingredients, so I know that it coats my hair.  Nonetheless,  I can add a daily dose of shine to my hair with this product to  keep my hair looking great all day.  I like the pump bottle–it dispenses just the right amount.  My hair is fine, and this product was not too heavy as other serums I have tried, so my hair wasn’t weighed down.

I read labels, and the three top ingredients in  Pantene Pro-V® Truly Natural Shine Serum with Argan Oil are Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone and Fragrance, so I’m not sure how much Argan Oil my hair is actually receiving. I think that it’s deceiving for consumers to see “with Argan Oil” in the name and it is probably in a minimal amount in the product.

Bling Factor:

Pro: Lightweight, adds shine, keeps flyaways at bay

Con: Argan Oil isn’t a primary ingredient, even though it’s included in the name

Price: $7.99

Buy Again: Yes

Packaging: 4 Blings

Overall: 4 Blings

This is one collection I really do like. I have always been a fan of Pantene, so I was excited to try this line out. I really liked all the products. I did the same as your first daughter with the custard, I used waaaayy too much and I have perfectly defined curls, but with LOTS of crunch. It’s a really good collection from what I’ve experienced.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
