How to Look 40 at 50 — 5 Easy Steps

A couple summers ago, I was renting a car for work, and the agent looked at my license and said “Happy birthday!” I replied, “Oh, thanks, it’s just another day.” Then he looked at me, and looked at the license and said, “Wow, I guess 50 must be the new 30.” Yes, he said 30.blog-pic Now, I’m sure he was exaggerating a bit, but I’ll say it, I’m 52, but I don’t look a day over 40. Ok, 45. I know a huge factor in my youthful appearance my age defying looks are my genes. My granny is 97 and I don’t think she has a wrinkle. My mom died at 68 with skin that didn’t look older than 50. So I have a slight advantage. But, I do have a few tricks up my sleeve:

1. CONCEALER
I can’t live without concealer and blush. My fellow 50 somethings, lose the dark circles and you lose 10 years. My favorite new concealer is is by LORAC, and it has the bonus of a highlighter on the opposite end of the concealer. Tip — apply concealer to the inner corner of the eye and against the bridge of your nose. You will need less under the eye and avoid that reverse raccoon effect. lorac-concealer Next is…

2. BLUSH
I used to be a die hard NARS blush addict, and I still use his blushes all the time, BUT, I fell in love with Laura Geller baked blush in Sunswept last year. It is the perfect combination of bronze, pink and apricot. And ladies, don’t be afraid to blush. It adds life, lifts the face and brightens your complexion.blush-n-brighten

3. DEW IT!
We were probably all thankful when matte makeup came into vogue in the 80’s, but now with 50+ skin, avoid it like white bread. It just plain dries you out, emphasizes every pore and wrinkle. Who needs all their flaws in the forefront? Use a light hand with powder, only in areas where you tend to have shine. Try tinted moisturizers or hydrating foundations instead. I love Laura Mercier and Smashbox, They are double duty — coverage for your skin and SPF protection in one fell swoop.smashbox-tinted-moisturizer

4. LIGHTEN UP
If you are heavy handed with the face paint, give it a rest. Lighten up. Less is more. Leave the heavy black eyeliner to the youngsters. Try bronzes, emeralds, charcoals and shades of navy. A touch of shimmer in your liner brightens the eyes and opens the face. Be sure you eyebrows are at least one shade lighter than your hair. And speaking of hair, going a touch lighter is a beautiful way to take a few years off.

5. PERFECT YOUR POUT
Get into the new millennium with lips that are au currant. Many women find that they have lost some fullness in their lips by 50. Others see lines and wrinkles popping up. If you are wearing dark lipstick, PLEASE stop. It’s aging and just plain ugly. It makes your lips look smaller and puts you back 20 years. Instead try a moisturizing lipstick or gloss. I love Clinique’s Colour Surge Butter Shine Lipstick. The formulas a fabulous — look like gloss, but wear like lipstick. And I don’t mean that XXX kind of gloss either. Try Poppy Love. It’s the perfect nude coral/pink. It looks like lips. Make that luscious kissable lips.

Remember, 50 is the new 30.
