Beauty News: Birchbox Receives Another Round of Funding

Don't you just love trying new beauty products? Getting samples of your favorite brands or new products to try? Particularly DELUXE samples?  I do.  Well I prefer full-size, but a sample is great for travel, and a wonderful way to get a feel for a new product.

Well, WWD reported that Birchbox is getting more money, so that they can expand.  YEA!

The online beauty sample site Birchbox Inc. is set to receive another round of financing.

The one-year-old business — founded by former Harvard Business School classmates Hayley Barna and Katia Beauchamp — closed a $10.5 million Series A round of funding led by Accel Partners. Existing investors from the company’s seed financing in September 2010 also invested in this round, including First Round Capital.

Birchbox.com relies on a paid membership base. For $10 a month, members receive a box of deluxe-sized samples selected specifically for them across hair, makeup and skin care every 30 days. The site’s 80 brand partners include Kiehl’s Since 1861, Nars Cosmetics, Oscar Blandi, Deborah Lippmann, Stila and the recent addition of Smashbox.

The Web site also features beauty tips and how-to videos.

Beauchamp said Birchbox aims to fill a need that has surfaced from selling beauty online. “Beauty products have to be touched, tried and experienced,” she said. Also, “Every woman wishes she had [beauty] editor-like access to a beauty closet.”

Beauchamp said the company plans to refrain from releasing membership count for the near future, but when last shared in June it was in the neighborhood of 45,000. She said this latest round of funding will allow the company to grow faster and add additional employees. The site plans to test expansion into other services and categories as well, said Beauchamp.

If you are interested in sighing up, just go to Birchbox.com.
