I recently whacked all my hair off. I don’t know if it was post mid-life crisis, my ADD or a combination of both, but I made the cut. And it’s pretty cute. Kind of Halle Berry-ish, but medium brown with blond highlights.
Now, since I am having hot flashes on a regular basis, my hair doesn’t hold it’s flat iron too well, but that’s fine by me. I like my mixed curly/wavy textured hair. But it’s the frizz thatI can’t stand.

Aubrey Organics Hair Smoothing Serum
So, I finally tried out Aubrey Organics NuStyle Organic Hair-Smoothing Serum, and it’s just perfect for smoothing my frizzies, without being heavy or unnecessarily coating my hair. I love it. I can go “natural” without looking like I stuck my hair in an electrical socket. And the best part is that my hair FEELS good.

Chaka Khan circa 1975
I have a penchant for big hair. I think it began when I first saw and heard Chaka Khan. Even though I couldn’t sing a lick, I secretly yearned to be Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan. So, since I could only sing into my lotion bottle and live vicariously through my Rufus LP’s, I made a pact with myself that one day I would have big hair.

Thinking back on it, significant women in music have pretty much always had big hair. Think about Diana Ross; some of the biggest hair I have ever seen. Maybe Chaka was trying to outdo Diana’s hairdo. I think I will call them hair divas. And maybe that big hair thing is genetic, just look at Tracee Ellis Ross. Her hair is voluminous and tres sexy.

Today, there are more hair divas. Beyonce’ is the queen of big hair. And I must admit, she wears it well. Even Rihanna’s hair is big, albeit short. In view of the trend of musical women sporting big hair, I have come to the conclusion that men must love copious amounts of hair on women. Heck, I’m a woman I love all that hair on women.
With that said, clearly then, big hair must be an accoutrement that breeds fierceness. Today is Friday, and it’s it’s all about getting fierce. So go for it ladies, get big hair– get fierce.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again — I’m the poster child for big, frizzy hair. Without products that actually tame my fine, curly curly frizz, I might as well just go funky ‘fro. (Which by the way is my current state of tress…) I do however have a segment to take with our local CBS affiliate tomorrow and this hair must be under control. So, I am going to work with what I know handles my frizz. I might mention that right now in the San Francisco Bay Area, most specifically, Oakland, it’s pouring! So I know that my hair is at risk for not holding up and looking sleek unless I bring it with both barrels.
I know from personal experience that the Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine line — all of it, shampoo, conditioner and styling products — works unbelievably well on my hair. I didn’t expect it, but I got results! My bangs that suffer from a constant onslaught of personal summer perspiration remain straight, whereas with other products I have had combination hair. Yes, you read it right — combo hair, not skin. My bangs are big and frizzy and the rest of my hair is still straight.
Not so long ago I wrote about women taking the plunge and ditching their long locks for the freedom of short hair. Halle chopped her hair and returned to her signature pixie cut and other celebs have followed suit. Many of my friends have gone the way of short and sexy hair as well. Now Ciara. I’m getting there myself. I LOVE short hair. Here is Ciara with her short hair, what do you think?

I love the hair, it’s that clearly artificial boob versus that’s bugging me.

I’m the poster child for damaged hair. My foray into killing my hair started in high school. My best friend and I didn’t have a clue about how to use our Sun In. But we sprayed and went about our teenage giggling and whatever else teenage girls do. All of a sudden Judy looks up at me and screams at me, “Your hair is orange!” We wash it out and I have orange skunk stripes. Not to mention that my hair felt like a Brillo pad.
Not much has changed today. I still change my hair color frequently. I used to fly almost daily for work, so I had them totally confused at TSA – on my passport I had jet black china doll hair, on my license big blonde hair, and my in person hair was reddish brown with highlights. Factor in that my hair is naturally curly and frizzy and I’m a walking disaster without the benefits of conditioner. Since high school, I have learned my lessons, and I have a love affair going on with conditioner. I mean all kinds of conditioner — deep conditioner, leave in, rinse out, sprays, masks, daily — you name it, I use it.
With that being said, I have to make a plug for one of my favorite hair lines — Phytospecific. If you put your hair through the ringer like I do, you owe it to yourself to use this product line made specifically for textured hair. My favorite product is the Moisturizing Styling Balm. A luxurious plant based cream that melts into your hair protects and re-energized lifeless locks. This line is plant based (hence the name Phyto=plant) and chemical free. Even the relaxer is formulated with soy and eggs. It is pricer than your beauty supply products, but your hair will thank you. Everyone that I have turned on to this line has seen an immmediate and long lasting change with their hair. With three levels of hydration choices, you are able to customize your regimen.
If your hair needs a miracle and you have the bucks to shop this weekend, enjoy 15% off by using my favorite source for Phytospecific. Code at check out is CAVIAR and expires on Monday July 20, 2009.
Happy De-frizzing!

- Halle Berry at Spike TV’s 2009 ”Guys Choice Awards” May 30,2009
Short and sexy hair! So the new trend with so many African American women, celebrities included, is to lose the locks! Freedom from the weave, the wig, and fear of swimming. Just look at Halle Berry. I LOVE her with short hair. I’m a 50+ woman and I think Halle is the bomb. In my book she’s the sexiest woman in Hollywood, hands down. Her body is perfection, her skin is flawless and she is a NATURAL beauty. She definitely hit the jackpot on the gene pool. Halle hit Hollywood with a cute face, slamming body and short hair. Halle went through a what I will call a mid-life crisis and caved into the “Hollywood” look.
However, her short hair evolved into a signature look that we all grew to love. Her face matured and her cheek bones became even more prominent. Those beautiful eyes and bright smile are what makes Halle the ideal candidate for short hair. That short pixie hair was at it’s shining best when she won her Oscar in 2002. (She was also married to Eric Benet at the time. Enough said. ) Okay, Halle just can’t look bad, but you have to admit that she is the bomb with shorter hair. I’m glad she finally came to her senses and realized that her facial beauty is just brought to the fore with her sexy short hair cuts. Halle Berry has sealed her fate as a Beauty Icon for the ages with her signature short hair!
